Getting 300 Ultima on Disk Two
If you have the patience, one of the most rewarding things to do in Final Fantasy VIII is to acquire ultima as early as possible. As you probably already know ultima is the best junction spell for pretty much all stats. This technique can be done as soon as you have access to the mobile garden on disk 2.
Go to Shumi Village (top of the Tribia continent) go inside and just before you enter the elevator on your left there will be three Shumi’s guarding a draw point. You have to pay 5000 gil to use the draw point but as you have already guessed the draw point contains ultima, and quite a lot of it. Each draw will give you hopefully 10 or so ultima’s. The secret to getting the draw point to refill is to do a certain number of steps.
I found the easiest way to refill the draw point is to do two laps around the island that the Shumi village is on. You can do less steps and still refill the draw point but you might only get a lousy 4 or so ultimas. Also note that you can use a Chocobo to add to the step count, garden however dosen’t. Make sure to see what color the draw point is before you pay the cash, blue = empty, purple = ultima spells.
There is also a one time only ultima draw point in FH in the mayors house. Refer to the screen shot, you can see it with Siren’s move/find ability.
Removing Card Rules In Final Fantasy VIII
After you have liberated Balamb town on disk 2 go down to the docks and you may notice a guy crouched down facing out to sea (refer to screen shot). Vs him to a game of cards and you may notice that any rules you were previously carrying aren’t there. I highly recommend doing this before you carry undesirable rules over from region like Centra to places like Balamb and infect the region with plus or random. If he’s not there simply zone in and out.
Grendel Monster Location
sea research center and Garabaldi Forest (where the party have the second Laguna dream). It is also fought on disk two in Balamb garden as a one off mini boss and can be found in Ultemecia’s castle although I don’t recommend fighting it here due to its low spawn rate. On the island closet to hell, one of the encounters you will have will be 2 level 100 Grendels. In Garabaldi forest their encounter rate is 100% if you RUN ALONG THE SIDE OF THE FOREST TOUTCHING THE CLIFF, they can’t be encountered if you are in the middle area of the forest (look where Squall is in the screen shot). You will only fight 1 Grendel at a time in Garabaldi Forest. Tips – Only Grendels level 20 or under drop dragon fangs. A Grendels level is determined by your party’s average level (as all monsters and most bosses). Make sure you do not mug, you will get dragon skinsYou can use Grendels to get Flare early (right after timber). Scroll down to “Holy and Flare on Disk 1″ to find out how.
Unlimited GF and Player Cards
That’s right you can refine GF and Player cards using the card mod ability and then win them back an unlimited amount of times.
This can done on disk 4 when the cc club members appear on the Rangnarok (assuming you completed the cc club side quest earlier).
Ok, firstly this only works for non queen of cards side quest cards. It is possible to get unlimited Doomtrain, Phoenix, Irvine, Kiros and Chubby Chocobo cards but it is more difficult. It is outlined at the bottom of this tip how to do it.
Choose what card you want to refine into items then card mod it. If you look in your card inventory it will say “Used Up”. To win it back challenge Zu in the Rangnarok, she will probably have some undesirable rules that will make if difficult to beat her i.e. plus and random. If you want to abolish these rules it outlined below. Once you have challenged her and accepted the game you may notice that she will play the card you just modded! If it does not appear don’t worry, in my experience she will play it every 2 or 3 games. Simply beat her, choose the card you modded and repeat.
You can get a ton of useful rare item this way and even boost your characters stats, here the easiest stats to boost:
VIT – Mod Gilgamesh into 10 holy wars which convert into 2 knight codes using GF ability mod, one knight code converts into vit up using forbidden medicine ability. Alternatively you could use Minotaur.
STR – Mod Eden into 3 monks codes then convert then into 3 STR ups using the forbidden medicine ability.
Removing Rules Unfortunately there is no easy way to do this but there is a way. I recommend that you try to get plus and random abolished as it makes it a hell of a lot easier in my opinion. To abolish rules challenge Zu to a card game, wait till you get to the screen which says play or quit and select quit, do this until she notifies you that she will “hold off” whatever rule you want gone. This can take alot of tries so be patient.
Getting Unlimited Doomtrain, Phoenix, Irvine, Kiros and Chubby Chocobo Cards These can be won back from the twin on the right in the Ragnarok. Unfortunately she uses horrible rules and does not play a rare card as often as Zu.
Playing cards to get Tornardo, Pain, Meltdown, Quake and others on Disk 1
All of these spells plus the “ga” spells, pain and numerous other can be aquired on disk 1 with a bit of effort.
Abyss Worms Tornardo - Tornardo can be aquired right at the beginig of the game once you have learnt Quezacotl’s T Mag-RF, and card mod (you have to learn card before you can learn card mod by the way). Once you have learnt these go and win abyss worm cards, the boy who has mini mog has a good supply of them. Each abyss worm can be card modded into 1 windmill which using T Mag-RF can be converted into 20 tornardos. 100 tornardos junctioned to a level 7 Squall will give him 3438 HP and is also a great magic for boosting strength and magic so it well worth the effort to get it.
Snowlion Blizagga - Can be modded into 1 North Wind, North Winds can be converted into 20 blizaggas using Shiva’s ice/water. Blizagga significantly boosts strength, magic and HP (not as much as tornardo though). Boy that has Mini Mog uses snowlions frequently.
Blitz Thundaga - Can be modded into 1 Dynamo stone , Dynamo stones can be converted into 20 thundagas using Quezacotl’s T Mag-RF. Thundaga significantly boosts strength, magic and HP (not as much as tornardo though). Woman in Balamb town as you first enter, taking to guy in the white or Dr Kawasaki in the infirmary.
Tri-Face Pain - To get pain learn Siren’s ST Mag-RF. 1 tri face can be modded into a 1 cursed spike which converts into 10 pains. Pain is fantasic for boosting magic, HP and as a status defense or status attack junction.
Gayla Meltdown - 1 Gayla card can be modded into 1 mysterious fluid then converted into 10 meltdowns using Diabloses ST Mag-RF. Meltdown is the best vitality boosting magic (other then ultima but only by 2 points). Gayla cards are also very abundant being used by most card players.
Armadodo/T-rexaur Quake - 1 Armododo card can be converted into a dino bone which can be converted into 20 quakes using Diabloses T Mag-RF. 2 T-Rexaurs can also be modded into a dino bone.
Holy and Flare on Disk 1
If you have 100 of a certain card and then try to use the “card” command on that specific monster the only card you will get is the boss card (it will likely miss a few times but eventually you will get their, be patient) that it relates to (each monster card relates to a boss card with a few exceptions). For example if I was to go to the training arena and card 100 Grats then went to card Grat 101 I cannot fit any other Grat cards in my card inventory so the only card I can possibly get is the Shumi Tribe boss card. By doing this it is possible to get multiple “card” command abilities (4 shumi tribes can be card modded into 1 card command) which makes life a whole lot easier when trying to card 100 monsters in the future.
To get holy finish the dollet mission then once back at Balamb enter the fire cavern, card either 100 bombs or buels (I recommend Bombs as they appear in groups unlike Buels) then the 101 bomb you card will be a Krysta. Krysta cards convert into 10 holy stones which can be converted into 10 holys using Siren’s life/mag ref.
Flare becomes accessible after the second dream the team have (that forest before you enter Garibaldi garden). Once you have completed the dream with Laguna and co run along the sides of the forest that are touching the cliffs, here you will fight only one monster which is a Grendel. Card 100 of these and the101 card you will receive will be a Tiamat. The Tiamat card can be modded into 10 flare stones and then into 10 flares using Ifrits F Mag-RF.
How to win more than 1 card
How annoying is to play someone at cards, win and then have to choose 1 card when there are actually multiple cards you want.
To win more then 1 card go to Balamb (you can do this right at the beginning of the game) and go to the train station and play the Queen of cards (lady standing in front of the train dude). You may notice that the trading rules will change each time you challenge her.
The rules you are looking for are DIFF or ideally ALL. If you challenge her and these are not there select quit. Wait until you see DIFF or ALL then play her and win (shes really easy).
Now go play someone else in Balamb (im probably just being superstitious but I always play the girl at the beginning of Balamb as I find she adopts the trading rule quicker) and see if that trading rule is there, try challenging a few times as sometimes the rule ONE will be their for 2 or 3 games. If not play the Queen of cards again and repeat. Once the trading rule has spread to other people in Balamb go back to Garden (if the people you want to play are there) and they should have the trading rule you want. The rule will eventually go back to ONE after awhile so just repeat the process.
